India & Illiteracy

Updated: Sep 7, 2020

India, a land of culture and diversity, is also a land of third of world's illiterates and what it is, if not a vicious circle of poverty and Illiteracy ? Illiteracy refers to the inability of reading and writing. Where literacy is the key to the socio-economic progress of a Country, India still lacks behind in the same even after more than 70 years of independence and a massive education revolution. With a 74.04 per cent of Literacy rate, we wonder what not being educated enough in a developing country does to that 25 per cent of a population of 135 crores ? One may draw the fact that the Literacy rate has improved since Independence

but what we can also not ignore is the Country's increasing population rate, keeping the dynamics equally unstable as before. A major reason behind India's Illiteracy is the fact that a portion of the population of our Country lives in a pedestal where the maximum they desire for, is daily bread. Education is still a dream for many. When the parents are not educated, they fail to earn enough to send their young ones to school and when those young ones turn into adults, they also continue to earn meager enabling themselves and their future generations to not avail a luxury lifestyle. An another disappointing reason is the normalization of Gender Inequality in India. Not allowing girls to this very basic right, we pave ways for our Country to lag behind. By enabling kids to work, young girls to work as house helps and young boys to work in factories and shops, we as a privileged community, continue to grow the gap among the the different classes. The Rich continues to afford International Universities and the poor continues to not purvey themselves with the basic education. We surely cannot obliterate Illiteracy but it could be trimmed. By creating awareness among the needy, helping them understand the structure of Education and its importance, millstones could be achieved. The privileged classes can also pledge to distribute free books, help children around them with the basics of subjects and fund if possible. A lot many NGOs also work for the cause and by lending our hands for help, we can surely bring a change. Let us bring in lights the line ‘Each one- Teach one.’
