Domestic Violence

“At any given moment you have the power to say this is not how the story is going to end.”

As October is the month of Domestic Violence Awareness, we are here with our next blog on the same.

Domestic violence against women is a serious problem that threatens the emotional and physical well being of women, and that negatively affects the quality of their life. Men are always the dominating gender in the society and they used to beat their wives up for many different reasons and even they do the same because this is what society expects of the man to do in order to protect his role as the man and the dominating leader. And sometimes, women get used to it just because they are bound to some relations and never complain about the same. Some psychologists also claimed that violence from men’s side could also be due to the inferiority complex as they start thinking that the woman is superior to them. Also, in backward areas of India violence against women is a part of their tradition and authorities try not to intervene to protect the women even if she’s seriously injured. As we all know that women are really fragile and that’s the reason they always tolerate this kind of behaviour as they have a fear that a divorce could shatter the lives of her children. A second factor could be economic need, that is there can be a woman who’s not highly educated to get a job and earn for her livelihood. About 86% of women who experienced violence never asked for help, and 77% of the victims did not even blabber the incident to anyone. During this pandemic violence cases are flooded within the country. The first four phases of the COVID-19 lockdown saw Indian women filing more domestic violence complaints than recorded earlier in the past 10 years. According to one of the reports, 2020 was the major year in which cases were at peak and between March 25 and May 31, 1,477 complaints of domestic violence were made by women.
